Reason for Award
The main character in Osamu Tezuka’s volatile story of youth at the end of the Edo era is his great grandfather, the Russian-trained doctor, Ryoan. Gisaburo Sugii has long had a powerful influence on animation with his film “Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru” and his ambitious TV series “Dororo” of many years ago. The faithful, steady and interesting execution of this work was impressive.
