Outline

The EyeWriter project originates in the dream of Tony TEMPT1, a graffiti artist who suffered paralysis as a result of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS), to be able to draw again. With the cooperation of a wide range of participants, the core team of artists and engineers developed tools that will allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes.
The project succeeded in developing a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus and custom software, which is available as an open source.

Reason for Award

Attainment of new physical presence in the real world of the street
Created through collaboration among members of Free Ar t and Technology (FAT), OpenFrameworks developers, Graffiti Research Lab, and The Ebeling Group Communities, The EyeWriter is an eyetracking system developed inorder to allow TEMPT1, a graffitiartist and activist diagnosed with a disease that has left him almost completely physically paralyzed, to draw graffiti on monitors and external walls using just his eyes. The evaluation axis of this work is focused on the moving humandrama that has inspired its creation, as well as on the expansion of the creative functionality of computers to the outside world represented by the street. This project is ambitious not simply as a simulation of actual physical presence, but for its strategic vision to reenter the real world and regenerate a new type of physical presence and community. Since The EyeWriter system is an opensource, it has the potential of being utilized by various people and for various purposes.
