・Miraikan is unable to screen video works that seek to publicize or advertise merchandise (including corporate logos and names of merchandise) or the like; such works are ineligible for selection.

  • Video works to be newly created for the spherical exhibitions at Miraikan (planned/unfinished works)

  • Common Requirements for the Geo-Cosmos Category / Dome Theater Category

    Images of works (required)

Images and sketches that show the images to be projected.

    * Please use the designated template for the Geo-Cosmos category.

    Script (required)

A summarization of the scenes and flow of the story.
For music and sound effects, include the scenes and images they will be used with.

    Sample video, demo video (required)

A video containing images of a part of the work or the finished work, a video showing the work being played back, or the like.

    * There is no restriction on the length of sample/demo videos.

    Overview of technology
    (required for application programs only)

Write about the technical essentials, such as the process of execution (what kind of information was used to create the work, and how it was used), what software was used, use of external equipment, and system architecture.

Final productions after awards are announced

If an entry wins an award, the work must be created in either of the following formats (A: Video content, B: Application programs). Entrants who submit finished works must adjust them in order to comply with the following formats.
(Entrants who submit finished works can use the actual machinery and equipment to preview their works. Entrants wishing to do so should contact the contact person. No usage fee is required for machinery and equipment installed at Miraikan; however, entrants must bear other costs.)
  • Geo-Cosmos Category

    • Common requirements (A and B)

      Length of video work

      1-3 minutes

      * Color reproducibility and brightness
・In principle, entrants are free to use whatever colors they choose. However, we may make adjustments such as slightly reducing the brightness of whites to avoid screen burn on the organic EL panels. The EL panel has a part (about 600 parts) that are constantly lighted linearly (e.g. in green). The works that has large area in black may make this linearly light stand out.
・The characteristics of the organic EL panel devices may cause blues and other colors to change when projected onto Geo-Cosmos.
    • Requirements for A: Video content

      Submission format

Export the video data in serialized PNG files, and submit the audio data in separate files. For details, follow the prescribed format.

      Playback of works

Works are played on a player designed specifically for the Geo-Cosmos system. Miraikan will handle the task of recording the submitted data.

      Audio specifications

The following acoustic environment is also available.

      Oval Bridge speaker system specifications
      Compatible format: WAV
      Channel: Two-channel stereo
      Sample rate: 48kHz
      Quantization bit rate: 24-bit

    • Requirements for B: Application programs

      Submission format

Bring a PC onto which the finished work has been installed in executable status.

If bringing a PC poses difficulties, it is possible to rent one from Miraikan; however, it is not possible to request certain specs or models. (For more information, see “Information: Miraikan PC specs” below.) The entrant is asked to arrange the required software and configure the operating environment. Submit executable programs, required software, and other materials needed for application programs. For details, follow the prescribed format.

For works using external equipment such as cameras or sensors, the entrant is responsible for preparing, installing, and adjusting any necessary equipment. However, please note that there are structural and operational restrictions on the installation of equipment inside the Miraikan facility. Please contact the Japan Media Arts Festival Contest Office at jmaf-fpaward@cgarts.or.jp for details or confirm them at the technology briefing.

      * Available network
Entrants can connect their PCs to the internet via NAT.
The connection is made available only for the domain, IP address, or port required for screening works once they are verified.
It is not possible to connect to a PC for screening from the internet.
      Playback of works

PCs brought by entrants will remain at Miraikan during the screening period (the duration of the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival Exhibition of Award-winning Works), and Miraikan staff members will use them to execute and screen the works.

If bringing a PC poses difficulties, the works will be screened from Miraikan PCs.

The screening system automatically maps two-dimensional videos transmitted from the applications onto the spheres using equidistant cylindrical projection.

      * Design works so that they can be properly enjoyed no matter what time they are played back. (For example, do not submit works that can only be played at a specific time each day.)
