Born in Fukuoka Prefecture, 1947. After entering Kodansha Limited in 1970 he became the editor of Weekly Shonen Magazine, where he learned about manga while overseeing series' by TEZUKA Osamu, CHIBA Tetsuya, TANIOKA Yasuji, MINAMOTO Tarou, MOTOMIYA Hiroshi, and others. In 1980 he became the chief editor of Monthly Shonen Magazine. In 1982 he launched the Weekly Morning and Monthly Afternoon magazines, delivering nearly 1,000 regular and special issues to the world as the chief editor over a 16-year period. KURIHARA began editing for foreign manga artists starting in 1988, establishing an international manga fellowship program for his magazine where under numerous manga-related individuals were invited to Japan in efforts to pursue distinction and universality for Japanese manga. Of the manga created between the years 1982 and 1998 in Morning and Afternoon, manga works that received prominent manga prizes include SADAYASU Kei and YAMASAKI Juzo's The Strange Couple, KOBAYASHI Makoto's What's Michael?, KAWAGUCHI Kaiji's Actor and Chinmoku no Kantai, HIROKANE Kenshi's Section Chief Kosaku Shima, AOKI Yuji's The Way of the Osaka Loan Shark, IWAAKI Hitoshi's kiseiju, YAMAMOTO Yasuhito' s γ, The Iron man, KING GONTA and YI Hagin's Beyond the Heavens, CHEN Uen's Heroes of the East Chou Dynasty, ARAI Hideki's Miyamoto kara Kimie, TANAKA Masashi's Gon, YAMASHITA Kazumi's The Life of Genius Professor Yanagizawa, FUJISHIMA KŌsuke's Oh My Goddess!, SAMURA Hiroaki's Blade of the Immortal, SAKAGUCHI Hisashi's Akkanbe Ikkyu, and others.
The several series that KURIHARA oversaw are ongoing now. For example, AKIZUKI Risu's OL Shinkaron and UEYAMA Tochi's Cooking Papa, and many of his works have been transcribed for theater and film, such as EGAWA Tatsuya's BE FREE!, OZE Akira's Natsuko no Sake, TSURUTA Kenji's Spirit of Wonder, YASUDA Hiroyuki's Shomuni, and WATASE Seizou's Heart Cocktail. Also, KURIHARA has stolen the hearts of many Japanese readers using transcribed works from foreign artists that make use of Japanese manga style, published these in Japan, and received prizes for them. These include LEE Jae Hak's Daiketsuga, FAUN Mina's Isan' chi no Monogatari, and OH Sehoon's Mizu no Kuni no Ariran from the Republic of Korea, CHEN Uen's MAGICAL SUPER ASIA from Taiwan, BARU's AUTOROUTE DU SOLELL and Baudouin's Tabi from France, IGORT's YURI from Italy, Beneyto's Kabel Imagines from Spain, and Jon J. Muth's Imaginary magnitude from the United States.
