Camera Lucida: Sonochemical Observatory

Using a phenomenon called “sonoluminescence,” an installation work visualizes a sonic wave which should be invisible. When looking at a water cistern in an absolute darkness surrounding space, fine bubbles dance in a liquid according to sonic movements and shine like living things.

While waiting for my eyes to become accustomed to the dim light of the room, biological movement of fine bubbles dancing in liquid emerges. The mysterious and beautiful motion which has never been seen before is provided by sophisticated technologies. Its serene and contemplative space reminds us of the human being’s primitive experience of floating in the mother’s womb, and takes the viewer into a deep inner psychological world. At the same time, it makes us realize that the greater part of the composition of the body of a human being consists of water. The artist has succeeded in creating a marvelous space where a viewer experiences his or her five senses being excited and various images come up with a perfect balance of leading-edge technology and the artist’s presentation skills of installation.
