Nostalgia

This ambitious film confronts a typical Japanese theme straight on. A turtle crawls slowly across the tatami mats, and the viewer’s attention is elaborately and deliberately directed to every nook and corner of the room. Just as you find you’ve begun counting the grains of the tatami mat, a ray of sunlight shines into the room. As you watch the water lilies floating on a manmade pond, you find yourself recalling some nostalgic scene of your own. The ending title seems to be a homage to the movies of Yasujiro Ozu.
