SATO Shigeru
Outline
Working as an engineer alongside the late UENAMI Wataru and SHIOTANI Hiroshi at the NHK Studio of Electronic Music, established in 1955, SATO Shigeru was involved in producing works by countless composers at the dawn of electronic music. A major contributor to the studio’s unique approach of creating special equipment tailored to each composer’s ideas, SATO turned it into a place to explore the links between contemporary technology and art, where composers could carry out their thought experiments. Moreover, with many of the ideas that emerged from the studio later applied to other types of music, we must not overlook the tremendous influence that SATO exerted on instrumental and other forms of contemporary music in Japan.
