Electronic Musical Instrument [Uruguay, Italy / Japan / France]
Alvaro CASSINELLI / MANABE Daito / KURIBARA Yusaku / Alexis ZERROUG
Outline
The work scoreLight is a playful musical instrument, capable of generating sounds from the lines of drawings and the contours of three-dimensional objects nearby. A modified laser scanner works as a pick-up head that searches for sounds over the surface of a vinyl record, with the significant difference that the groove is generated by the contours of the drawing itself. The result is a spot of light that dances on the surface of the drawing, while singing its secret score.

Reason for Award
The primary attraction of this work is that the laser light appears to have been given life. It reminds us of a small fish swimming swiftly in a shoal, or a bee busily flying around in search of honey. Moreover, as its name scoreLight implies, the device can generate sounds by means of the light, more specifically, the track of the light. On the surface, this work appears to be an unrefined idea utilizing an elemental technology. However, it can be used in various ways, such as a musical instrument, a game, or art to experience synesthesia. In other words, this piece suggests many possibilities for new entertainment concepts. Above all, it earned the award because it can provide a pure sense of fun by playing with a light ball.
